Water supply and how water is to be used determines the requirements for treatment. There are several levels of water treatment that can be applied based on the original contamination and the final levels of puritythat are required for use.
Some water quality requirements are set by standards, such as those for drinking water and recreation, other levels may be set by stringent requirements for very pure water used in a research laboratory, while other uses, such as raising fish in a large aquarium, require require another grade of water treatment. Each of the water quality levels require application of different treatment technology and performance for the treatment equipment.
